چکیده

INTRODUCTION Previous work from our group has identified extensive ligamento-muscular reflex pathways between the cervical facet joint capsule (FJC) and the superficial and deep cervical paraspinal musculature, both ipsilateral and contralateral to the stretched FJC, which were activated by physiologic low-rate (0.5 mm/s) [1] and high-rate (100 mm/s) [2] FJC stretch. Since approximately 22% of the FJC is covered with muscle insertions [3], the effects of active physiologic and neuromuscular systems on FJC biomechanics warrants investigation. In this abstract, we report our qualitative observations of the influence of cervical paraspinal muscle activity on FJC strains and loads during mechanical testing in an in-vivo goat model.

Mechanical evidence of cervical facet capsule injury during whiplash: a cadaveric study using combined shear, compression, and extension loading.

STUDY DESIGN A comparison of cervical facet capsule strain fields in cadaveric motion segments exposed to whiplash-like loads and failure loads. OBJECTIVES To compare the maximum principal strain in the facet capsular ligament under combined shear, bending, and compressive loads with those required to injure the ligament. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA The cervical facet capsular ligament is th...

Injury Biomechanics Research

The cervical facet joints are a source of pain in some chronic whiplash patients. Clinical data show that a head-turned posture increases the severity and duration of whiplash-related symptoms. The objective of this study was to quantify strains in the facet capsule during whiplash-like loading with an axial intervertebral pre-torque simulating an initial head-turned posture. These strains were...

Head-turned postures increase the risk of cervical facet capsule injury during whiplash.

STUDY DESIGN In vitro experiments using cadaveric cervical spine motion segments to quantify facet capsular ligament strain during whiplash-like loading. OBJECTIVE To quantify facet capsule strains during whiplash-like loading with an axial intervertebral prerotation simulating an initial head-turned posture and to then compare these strains to previously-published strains for partial failure...

Contact pressure in the facet joint during sagittal bending of the cadaveric cervical spine.

The facet joint contributes to the normal biomechanical function of the spine by transmitting loads and limiting motions via articular contact. However, little is known about the contact pressure response for this joint. Such information can provide a quantitative measure of the facet joint's local environment. The objective of this study was to measure facet pressure during physiologic bending...

The lumbar multifidus muscles are affected by medial branch interventions for facet joint syndrome: potential problems and proposal of a pericapsular infiltration technique.

Branch Interventions for Facet Joint Syndrome: Potential Problems and Proposal of a Pericapsular Infiltration Technique Low back pain is a major health problem. Like any structure of the spine and its adjacent musculature, the facet joints can be a source of pain. It has been proposed that in 15%–52% of patients with chronic low back pain, the facet joints are involved, but isolated facet joint...
